Top 10 personal issues

Weekend was mostly uneventful. Blah….I am getting too old for drama….I am going to steal KD’s idea from her site and do a top 10 issues of my life. For those who know us will see the similarites in the list and know why exactly we are friends

1) Time Management. When I am busy , I get everything done, when I am not busy, i procratinate like its a sport
2) Needy friends, boyfriends, parents, co-workers, people in general. I cannot be as involved in other people’s love/personal lives like I used to be. I only share my drama with 3 people max and expect other people to do the same and hopefully not have me as one of them.
3)Avoiding Conflict/Confrontation. I need to just tell people to leave me alone when I don’t want to do something, instead of feeling overwhelmed and guilty when i don’t go along with a plan or feeling resentful when I do
4) Body Insecurities. I know everyone has them, so I just need to get over it
5) Being Flirty. Should flirt if I want to and I should give people the boot if I want to and not worry what anyone thinks about my social skills
6) Being “bossed” around. I know what I want and i know why i want it, if i don’t, its still my life. I am tired of people I ‘ve allowed in my life-friends, family and b.f all need to stop telling me what to do , when I haven’t for an opinion.
7) Being overly analytical. I am getting better at this though!
8) Being more creative in my fashion choices. I am pretty darn good, but i can be better
9) Going to the gym. Must be more committed
10) Eating better and taking care of my health. i really don’t do this at all, because I am lazy and eat junk food and I avoid check ups, cuz I am deathly afraid of doctors. If i die at 30 no one will be surprised

Whew….that feels really good!!! Okay so maybe KD’s and mine are not that similar but its still obvious why we are friends…atleast to me anyway(insert cute “awwww” here )

Maybe this top 10 thing can be a weekly thing. Will ask her about it.

Survival of the nicest?

Last night we watched Hotel Rwanda. It was very moving and shaming at the same time. In fact at one point the main character even says “We must shame them into helping us”. We = Rwandans, and them= the west, UN, etc.
But the beauty of stories like Hotel Rwanda and Schindlers list is the fact , that inspite of horrors of war and mayhem, they are life affirming stories.

I like to believe that if these are the stories we continue to tell and remember and these are the stories are kids hear more than stories of glorified violence, hatred etc, we will be creating a kinder, gentler society. We will pass on the messages of peace and kindness as a desirable trait. This makes me incredibly optimistic , that even if it takes another century or even longer, we are on the way to swinging the pendulum in favor of peace.

Wedding Season

I don’t really want to get married. Yet.

However, all the wedding invitations that are pouring in, sure aren’t helping. I made up my mind before I moved out here that I won’t bring up getting married with J, ever. Well atleast, till 1 more year. So last night when i got kinda got a “why is everyone getting married except me” funk, i got kinda quiet. Not mean and not mad, just quiet. My guess is he knew why and kept trying to ask me what was wrong, but I persevered and did not say a word. Its a stupid game i know. But I feel a sense of control, like having the upper hand, if i dont mention marriage. I don’t think I’ll bring it up for another 6 mos, that would be a year after living together and see if we can start talking marriage realistically. If we can’t then one of us or maybe even both of us are in the wrong place.

I really don’t think I’m ready to get married yet, but I feel like I’m ready to have a wedding. I want to register for gifts and worry about favors and have everyone be happy for me. Thats the biggest challenge, seperating marriage from wedding. Am i ready to be with Jeff for the rest of my life….? Its a question I’d rather not answer. Am I ready for a party? Hell yeah!

So First things first….I am not an American Idol fan, I have watched the show four times and that was the first four episodes this season, the one where they make fun of all the rejects. I did not know anything about Fantasia Barrino till I heard her single on my local hip hop radio station.

It was not a wannabe love ballad but a song that was about women like her. Young Single Mothers, who are struggling to get a break. Its not a typical Lil Kim(ish) song about how she wants to “grind” all night long and basically fulfill some guy’s porno dream. This song is the truth its about the changing face of American society. She uses the line ” Cuz we the backbone( of the “hood)” and she speaks the truth. These young women, as old as me, and maybe with half my resources are not only trying to raise themselves but to raise a child as well. In spite of the stigma still attached to single motherhood and the squeamish way guys act the minute a woman mentions she has a child these women and single mother families are here to stay. They might not have your or my approval or consent to their way of life but they are going to make sure they survive.
She also says its “a badge of honor” , which is a little bit of a stretch but I see where its coming from. If you get criticized constantly by the christian right, the crazy ass republicans who are waiting to snatch away your welfare check and dumbass liberals who feel that they have to “uplift” you for raising your child and trying to to do the best you can with the circumstances you ‘ve been dealt, you’d be a tad defensive too.

I’m not saying there isn’t drugs and poverty and crack and mothers on meth in the hood or even in sunny suburbia for that matter, or this is something to be glorified but I don’t think she is doing that in the song. Yes there are plenty of women who are terrible mothers and plenty of women who get pregnant for the wrong reasons and let their life while away, but most of them grow up real quick and its not too much that they expect a little sympathy and a little support from society.

I don’t know if Fantasia is a good artist or musician or a good baby mama but from what I’ve heard on this single she has my support for whatever kind of music she wants to make and raise her kid as well as she can.

Our society is changing whether we want it or not and when we are older there’s going to be a lot of kids who came from single parent households who will be taking care of us. Isn’t it better we embrace them instead of filling them with shame about their roots. I would rather see my future full of strong, independent citizens who didn’t grow up ashamed about their roots and with a chip on their shoulder.

So this weekend I discovered Russell Peters. He is apna( well canadian) desi comedian. He was amazing, who knew us desis could be so hilarious and irreverent. The place was packed with other Indians too. My friend and I both commented on how we had never seen so many of them all at once, outside of India. Made me feel all sorts of strange.
We went to the afterparty and man I ‘ve never been to a club with 80% of people who are Indian(outsied india ofcourse). Good/Weird Times

Saw The Upside of Anger Saturday night- pretty good, i’ll give it a solid B. Nice, funny, poignant and entertaining. Not earth shatteringly good. Also had Grilled ahi tuna for dinner. Love ahi tuna

Spent a lot of time shopping this weekend! Spent the money i don’t have on some cute clothes. Hopefully that will inspire me to get skinnier. Ha!

Very motivated for work this morning! Feeling very chic, driven career gal ish. Must be the new skirt!

Tax Season!

So , it was completely impossible to be around J because he was doing his taxes. It is understandable , taxes are a bitch and it makes everyone grumpy.

I avoided grumpiness by paying $150 to someone else to do mine. Hmm….one of the benefits of filing as a single person. I got to decide how to deal with my taxes , if paying someone was worth it or not! If J andI were married and filing together, i doubt we would have gone to H&R Block and we would be stressing over it and being bitchy and snarky to each other.

Its great being independent…..

Besides, I don’t understand the hoopla about refunds anyway. I don’t really think about what the govt owes me all year and in march I just keep hoping I don’t owe any more in taxes. I wish the govt would just do away with refund and set up standardized healthcare for all its citizens. Really , knowing I won’t have to declare bankruptcy for falling sick is a better refund than $600.
