Kolkata Landmarks

 I am getting so excited for Kolkata that I thought I would post some famous sights of Kolkata. I did not take these pics, please see the next post for a few that I have taken.

 Howrah Bridge on the Hoogly is probably the most iconic landmark of Kolkata, it connects the main city to the Howrah Railway Station, which is the equivalent of Grand Central in NY. Like London has the bridge on the Thames, and New York has the Brooklyn Bridge, Howrah Bridge has captured the imagination of the city and its visitors, making it a much beloved lifeline of the city. It is usually crowded, full of traffic, and sometimes takes a good 40 minutes to get across the river, but it is always bursting with life. Ever since I was a little girl and we would get down at Howrah Station, I looked forward to crossing that bridge. To me its a symbol of beginnngs and journeys and it always features prominently in my memories. Lately, since we fly into Kolkata, I rarely cross the bridge anymore, but this year I am determined to cross it at least once and relive the excitement.

This beautiful photo is from a Flickr set by MarkEveleigh

Victoria Memorial in the heart of Kolkata. This is a building that was dedicated to Queen Victoria, when she was declared queen of India, during the British Raj. Victoria Memorial is set in the Maidan or a planned huge greenspace in the middle of the city. It is sort of like Central Park and many events and fairs take place here. Its also  a great place for a stroll or some quiet time.

Vidyasagar Setu or the second Howrah bridge was built in the 90’s to provide some relief to the Howrah Bridge. It is a very beautiful, modern bridge and worth driving along on. But it doesn’t quite hold the same appeal for me.

Writers Building is the main government seat of Kolkata. It is building that was originally constructed by the British in the 1700’s and has today become a symbol of Kolkata’s government. I love the bright red color of the building and the palm trees and statues around it.

Leaving Utah

Sunday, everyone left early in the morning. J and I hung out in Solitude till the afternoon and ate a awesome brunch at Creekside in Solitude and went hot tubbing. While we were driving down the canyon, the view was so beautiful that we had to stop and take pictures.

Vegas Baby Vegas

After the wedding festivities were over, J drove me down to SLC on sunday over to my old haunt and now KD and her husband’s home on Capricorn Way. We spent an hour or so figuring out our ceremony and then it was adios to J and we were on our way to Vegas.

The drive to vegas just flew by that day, since KD and I had so much to talk about. Since we left slc in the afternoon we reached Las Vegas at my favorite time. Driving on I-15 there is a hill about 20 mins away from vegas that lets you see the whole city ahead of you just glittering in the vast wilderness of the desert. Plus since travellers come up on it suddenly, it serves as a great introduction to vegas.

In spite of our quick drive and beautiful view we did run into some car problems right as we hit the strip, the car had overheated and thankfully we were able to make it long enough to pull into the hotel. After puttin some coolant in and deciding to let the car rest for a bit, we checked in and decided to head out for the night. I dressed it up to the nines and wore my green dress that I had originally planned to wear to my nonod’s wedding and KD dressed up in her super hot black shirt. We stopped by a 50s style diner for a late dinner and then hit the strip.

The first place we stopped at was a outdoor bar in front of Harrahs called carnival court. They had a cover band playing and the place was rocking. We drank some whiskey and cokes and danced and ogled the super hot frontman. We then headed down the strip to Mandalay Bay, we were looking for a specific club but we ended up at at place called Ivor Kane’s Forty Deuce.  This place had previously been out of our budget b/c there was a $25 cover charge, but since it was sunday and not a busy night they let us in for free.

This place had a completey different vibe, it was super upscale and whenwe ordered our vodka and cranberry drinks, they only gave us top shelf vodka. We made our way to the dance floor bar where it seemed that something was about to start. That something was a burlesque show! Yep, KD and I got to see a super cool, old school style, jazzy burlesque show for free in Vegas. It was an awesome show and the two girls were simply amazing in their acrobatics and of course they were gorgeous.

We spent the next day in Vegas just hanging out by the Stratosphere pool and enjoying the free buffet that we got. It was bliss, just lying in the sun, reading and drinking fruity drinks. That night was the night of the Blue Man Group and since I had never been to a BMG show before, I had no idea what to expect. It is something thats definitely different from what one expects , but for the better. I think not knowing anything about it made the show seem really cool, so I won’t write anything more about it, but the picture should suffice.

Leaving on a Delta Plane

Okay,so technically we are flying American Airlines, it just didn’t sound cool as a title.  So we are leaving in 16 hours for UT. I can’t believe it, its been so stressful lately turning stuff in for school and I am really excited to not think about it for a while. I’ll deal with the consequences when I get back.

 Its been a busy couple of days and its going to be super busy the next couple of hours! I got my dress back yesterday and it fits beautifully, thanks to all that extra weight I gained. Oh well!

 This week, I also dealt with the case of the missing cake lady and got another one to do my cake instead. Also, I decided I didn’t like the flowers my mom wanted, so I’ll be making my own bouquet! We also finally have all our food finalized and it place and we hired the people I originally wanted. J and I also finally managed to find a tie for him that will look good with his suit! ( He looks hoooooottttt! )

 I am so excited, hence the crazy rambling of superflous details.

Kings Dominion

img_1552.jpg img_1549.jpg

Yesterday, J and I spent nearly 12 hours at Kings Dominion, about 20 miles from Richmond. It had been a long time since I had been to an amusement park, probably about 3-4 years and it was fun to re-live teenage days of spending all day goind down water slides and waiting in lines for the coasters.

We got to Kings Dominion around 10 am to realize that we had forgotten sunblock, so we took a detour to a gas station  to buy some when J expressed an interest in some alcohol to get a little tipsy before we got on a ride. We tried one of those caffeinated malt beverages, which really didn’t get us tipsy but did make us hyper and made our way into the park.

img_1551.jpg

The first ride we did was the Beserker, followed by a kiddie ride called Space Cruzer. We then went on our first Stand Up Roller Coaster Ride- The Shockwave. It was the first time I did a stand up roller coaster and it was one of the more memorable coasters.  We also did the Grizzly, a huge old wooden coaster, White Water Rapids and Flying Eagles (Jeff’s fave kiddie ride) and Wave Swingers (my fave kiddie ride).

We spent the afternoon at the waterpark where we did the Tornado– one of the funnel style water rides. This was definitely one of favorite rides because it was something I had never done before. We rounded off our time in the waterpark by doing all the regular waterpark rides, like the Flume rides and the water slides and of course finished it off at the lazy river.

By the time we made our way back to the main part of the park, most of the crowds had thinned out and we were able to do the big rollercoasters without waiting for too long. We did the

Anaconda– a rollercoaster with an underwater tunnel and awesome loops.

Volcano– one where your feet are hanging and you get shot out of a volcano, the speed in that was amazing;

 Tomb Raider– which isn’t a coaster, but its a high in the air, upside down , spinning rides, it also had fire effects which was amazing;

The Italian Job coaster- the movie themed coaster that is really tight and fast, also the cars are little mini coopers.;

The Rebel Yell– An old wooden roller coaster on which you get to go backwards and do all the drops with your back on it;

The Hurler– A standard wooden roller coaster that has more loops than drops.

The Drop Zone– Vertical plunge of 305 feet.

We finished the day happy and sore. My feet were killing me and I think my burnt my soles walking barefoot on the concrete of the water park, but it was well worth it.

Note: All pics of the rides, except for the shockwave are from other resources. These were not taken by  me. I did not want to risk my camera falling out 🙂

Somerset Plantation

The second place we visited yesterday was Somerset Plantation. Somerset Plantation is one of the oldest and most prosperous Plantations of North Carolina. It is always weird to visit a plantation and to view the contrast of beautiful and stately contrasted very starkly with something grim and sad. This is the third plantation that I have visited and it was still a very unnerving feeling. Although it is funny to note that although Somerset Plantation was the most prosperous in NC , it definitely does not compare in size or scale to the Plantatins I visited around New Orleans some years ago. The Somerset Plantation is situtated on the shore of Lake Phelps and we were lucky enough to be able to join a free tour.  I learned about plantation life both from the point of view of the enslaved community and the owners.  Somerset is also well known because throughout its lifetime the Plantation had 800 slaves and now once a year their descendants gather at Somerset to reunite and learn about their roots. It was a huge learning experience for me and I was transported back to the Antebellum days for the afternoon.

J looking at the Stocks and detail. Our tour guide informed us that the stocks were used when members of the enslaved community were sold and that was the punishment that was most feared.  I took this photo to remind myself that the past is not always rosy and we that there have been some grim and gruesome incidents in our history.

This a view of the formal gardens of the plantation from the third story of the owners house. This is one of my favorite pics in a while. I love the contrast of the imperfections in the pane and the formal planned “perfect” gardens.

Pocosin Wildlife Refuge

Pocosin Wildlife Refuge is located in Columbia NC and the surrounding Tyrell county. It is the only place in the whole world that is home to the uncommon Red Wolf. The Red wolf is an endangered species and researchers are currently looking for more areas to rehabilitate them. Anyway, I really didn’t get to see one, but you can see from the stock image below how cool they are.

The Poconos Wildlife Refuge is situated around Scuppernong River and some other lakes, but since we didn’t have a lot of time we decided to take a walk along the interpretive boardwalk around the lake. It was a beautiful day with sunny skies and an awesome river breeze which contrasted really well with the dark, black waters of the Scuppernong.

When Life Gives You Lemons…

…Make Lemonade. This old proverb was very true for J and I yesterday. A while back J and I took a trip to the Outer Banks and got a very nasty traffic ticket on the way back. Well yesterday was the court date for that ticket and J and I decided to take a little day trip out to Columbia NC.

We left around 7:30 in the morning and got into Tyrell County around 10:30. The courthouse was on Main street and it was obvious that that the town was very old. I was eager to get the paperwork done and get to exploring because I had read that there were some neat things around Columbia. The DA reduced the ticket to a “unsafe movement” charge and that reduced the amount of the ticket by $200. We were so happy and relieved. We spent the rest of the day exploring Poconos Wildlife Refuge and Somerset Plantation. I did seperate posts of those because I had a lot of photos that I wanted to put up.
